OK guys, I've gotten a few questions about allowing ex pros to race in the expert class.
For some reason once you go pro you cant go back? Does this mean that if a guy was 29 and when he turned 30 he felt like giving the vet pro class a try. Then he got hurt and 11 years later now at 41 he will have to race the 40 Master class at our International? What if he wants to start out in the Amateur class? Its been 11 years since he rode.... Can I make the call to let him race in the Expert class? Is this a decision the club rep should be making?
Whats the actual rule on that, and what are your feelings on going back in class?

Let the club race rep. do it. That way it'll be on the up and up with the OTMX.

The way I am understanding your question is that this rider has never been a Old Timer Member in the past and his racing was interupted for the period between +30 and becoming ready to sign up with an otmx chapter and race with us. Now, if that understanding is correct, he should be treated as any other new member and be given the same classification as any rider just joining. If he has a real desire to ride expert than he should be allowed to sign up as such. He could even (as the rules state), sign up as a intermediate (am) and then be evaluated the first ride, race, moto. If his speed and skill are noted as higer than AM he would be asked to move to expert. If he shows compatable ability with lets say, you JB or your dad, or maybe Stan, then he is ok. If he smokes you guys, leaves chick in the dust, can handle someone like David Brown, then expert here we come. Do a play day ride or practice day with him, report your findings to Duane and then you guys make the decision. If you sandbag him, it will show the first international he attends so do the right thing and have him start as an AM and move up accordingly.............................Rooster

Used to be everyone started as an Expert now it's Amateur which has turned out a better place to start. Let him sign up and notify the OTMX Reps. They know the criteria and can get the job done. Just suggest to him that he not buy Amateur pre-printed backgrounds quite yet.

Saw Don Fanner at MMX yesterday (was a fast 50 expert then wrecked & he also builds the AMA Datona Supercross Track). He's coming back and even though he's an expert he was riding far less than that. He said he will be dropping down to Amateur.

Thanks for the responces guys. I gave him the option of Ameteur or expter. It sounds like Expert is a better fit for him. In the future I'll know the answer when asked.

If the new member is "Man enough" to step up and ride expert and he feels confindent in his decision, by all means, he should be an Expert. Hard enough getting riders to move up in classification through the ranks. If a guy says he will step it up, then let him, praise him, support him, and by all means, get his membership app and $25 bucks..................Rooster
