I can't wait to get back to the Fern this weekend! I have been going through sand withdrawls. E-street is nice but it's not as good as the Fern. I just got home from the GANG national at the oatfield. God I hate that place! It made me realize how good the Fern really is. I will see you there this saturday at 9:00am with boots and Carharts, ready to work.

Well since the few positive things that have posted on the mxwest sight have been deleted i thought i would post here where it belongs (and not get deleted). Fernley last weekend was a little Hecate. But in all it was a good day. The scoring was a little messed up but was fixable. Any time you have a new computer system its going to happen! I'm sure that Judy has been working her magic all week and the mess is taken care of.(With out anyone having to be slapped!)The mini track was crazy but once a gain fixable. I saw one of the score keepers apologizing for her mistakes and not one parent yelled at her. Keep up the good work and see you all at the next Fernley race.

I raced the +40 jr and the club race. My son raced the 50 beg. We had a great time! I was moto 12 and 16. I thought the track was in great shape. My first moto (12) was a little dusty. After the fourth corner it was fine. My first moto(16) was awsome! My second moto (12) was great, Would have been awsome if I had made it with out a crash. My sons races were good except that he blew out his rear shock in his second moto. The only bad thing that happened to us was that one of my motos and one of my sons motos were at the same time. Good thing granpa was there to take care of Jesse for his moto when I was on the track. As for the scoring problems. I don't even care how we finished. We rode hard and had fun. Thats all that counts!

Thaks Larry! I have corrected the mistakes (not nearly as many as some said) and they will be posted soon on the SMRA site. I SO wanted to watch Jesse race with my grandson, but you know how stuff goes. Thanks for all your help on the track. Its awsome that you drive all the way to the Fern just to work your tail off We all appreciate it more than you know. Thanks MUCHO!!! Judy

I thought the Fernley race was a good one. The track was fun, we got almost enough laps and the weather was great. I have a couple of questions. In response to the thread where George Haas was taken out in our moto. On my Sierra club app it asks "What is your Highest Classification"? In the +40 intermediate moto I only know 7 of the 10 riders that raced. 4 of them ride with the International Oldtimers as Experts and Higher. 3 of us are intermediate/amateur riders and the other 3 I don't know. One of the "Expert" Intermediate riders was sitting along the side of the track talking to a flagger when George and I came around and when he saw us he took off in between us went down a straight around a corner and pulled a perfect "Expert Move" on George taking out his front wheel injuring his leg. George and I were racing for 9th out of 10 at the time. I believe that if this rider had been in the proper class this wouldn't of happened. Aren't these riders given their "Expert" cards and their "Intermediate" cards by the same people, The Nevada Oldtimers? Maybe it would be best to keep it consistant. My next moto was the club moto where we used to always run 2 gates. Me being in the 2nd gate. On Sunday with only one gate I got a great start and almost got landed on over the jumps in the willows. Without the heroic efforts of the faster rider it would have been ugly. I didn't ride the 2nd club moto because I didn't want to be in the way. Is this going to be the norm (along with the new $ 25.00 price) for the club motos or was it an oversite? Thanks for the Race. Greg PS. The area looked good without the building out there.

Grreg:
Thanks for the post and thanks for coming out to our race in Fernley. It was kind of like old times. I brought my bike, but I was too busy running the PeeWee track and didn't even unload it. It would have been fun dicing with you and George.
Your concern that rider classification at the local level should be the same as in the Old Timer International series, as you know, is subject to some interpretation. There are 3 classes for +40 riders at the local races....Junior, Intermediate and Expert. +40 classification in the Old Timers is broken into 5 classifications.....Novice, Amateur, Expert, Master A and Master B. By your definition a Junior and a Novice are the same. An Intermediate and an Amateur are the same. But the problem is lumping the Old Timer Expert, Master A and Master B into the local Expert class. There will be some experts that should be in the Intermediate class. Hopefully, a short period of time will break the class properly.
I have no answer for your concern about the 1 gate start for the club race. I could suggest that the riders should have called for the split gate. But 2 gates could have been run without a problem.
The club race is only $15. If you paid $25, you were overcharged. I know that there was some confusion at the front gate early in the Sunday morning. They did not know that the club entrie were stacked under the 2nd class entries.
The old sign up shack just about filled up the 20 yard dumpster, but we were able to cram in the garbage, too.

You go from 5 +30 classes to 3 +40 classes. At Fernley there were 4 experts 10 ints and like around 24 jr's. Its seems that if the 4 rode the right class and you bumped up 8 of the jrs your classes would be more even and this might encourage more +40 guys to start racing. Or perhaps add a Master class to the top of the 40's. Even though I know you are striving for less classes. One of the guys in question even told me he was happy that Sierra was starting because he was one race away from being bumped to expert at MXWest. Some of us did ask for 2 gates during the club moto. Please don't take any of this as complaints just observations. Thanks Greg

Greg;
I have looked at the Fernley race results and I agree that the +40 classes seem lopsided. There are many more riders in the Junior class than the Intermediate and Expert. It seems that something could be done. There was no bumping during this first SMRA spring series. I don't know what the rule will be for the SMRA summer series. Judy is working on the results to see if there are any +40 Juniors or Intermediates that will be bumped before that series starts.
It has recently been suggested that another class be added to the +40 group. Maybe it should be a Master class. Maybe it should be a Beginner class. I think I favor the idea of a Master class as it falls in line with Old Timer rider classification. They have said that "there is no such thing as a +40 beginner".
You are right. I don't like the idea of adding yet another class, but that seems to be the way it is going. The riders are insisting on the chance to be eligible to compete in more than one class. Some would like to ride 3 classes at a race. The races become short sprints. The fast riders would not do as well if the motos lasted 20 or 30 minutes. Endurance would come into play. A stronger slower rider would have a better chance.
But, that doesn't look like it will happen. The riders like more classes and I think the promoter's like it, too.
