1st of all I would like to apologize to Judy for not getting this out earlier as I promised Judy almost 2 weeks ago….
My Daughter Amanda Andersen #688 crashed at Fernley on 3/11/07 and was Air Lifted (Care Flight) out to Renown (Washoe). When she arrived she was paralyzed from the waist down. Tests showed that she had busted L2 (Lower), they put her on Steroids to reduce swelling and scheduled surgery that Monday 6:00 pm to take the bone fragments out and then put some screws in to repair L2, the screws could be taken out a year later.
They put her in Trauma ICU unit and waited. Around 6:30 am she started to go downhill and at 7:00 am they took her into Emergency Surgery. The Neurosurgeon explained that things were a lot worse than originally anticipated. They had to use a 3” rod along with screws to fuse L1-L2-L3 together. A bone fragment punctured the Spinal Fluid and it was leaking, they had to plug and patch that. More of the fragments had embedded in the nerves, some nerves were folded in half HOWEVER none were severed. The Surgeon made it clear that if she would have been moved at the scene or bounced around in a vehicle she would never have been able to walk again. The Surgeons outlook; it will take at least 9-12 months to get back to walking alone…. The feeling can come back tomorrow, next week or a few months.
Today she still cannot feel her Right Leg… she can wiggle her toes but she can’t feel that she is wiggling them. We just say that Leg is on vacation... The Left Leg still has numbness and she can put weight on it. Yesterday we got the news that the latest batch of test(s) show that she has a Blood Clot and they are giving her medication to dissolve this. She will be in Renown in the Neuro Science Ward room 136 for at least 1-2 weeks and then shipped to Rehabilitation.
I sincerely would like to THANK the Flagger on the back straight away, Spectators, the EMT’s on sight and the Fernley Ambulance/Fire Department for noticing the extent of her injuries and taking every precaution in making sure the helped my Daughter. For the Flagger, making sure the Spectators did not move her and calling the race to further protect her. To the EMT’s on sight that made sure she was strapped to the backboard before rolling her over and then continued to strap her down to further protect her. To the Spectator(s) that allowed the board and Amanda to stage in the back of your pickup while the Ambulance got there. To the Fernley Ambulance/Fire Department that refused to transport her or move her from the back of the pickup because they felt it was too dangerous and called Care Flight to come and get her. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! You are all absolutely the reason my Daughter will walk again…..
Please do not hesitate to go see her, all visitors are welcome and greatly appreciated!!!!!
GOD BLESS and THANK YOU again.
